Why is Papa lying? It is a good spot to do some close reading and discussion. In order to be accepted into the Dauntless, the initiates must jump down into a hole without knowing what is at. As the reader we know that this is untrue. Papa tells Henrick that their are many cigarettes in Copenhagen if you know where to look. It happened when Papa was on the phone with Uncle Henrick. We found a contrast/contradiction in the novel Number The Stars. He says 'The worst part of holding the memories is not the pain. The other example of this signpost on page one hundred-sixty-four is also the Giver speaking to Jonas. In the short story, The Tell-Tale Heart, Edgar Allan Poe has his narrator complete. The moral the Giver is sending Jonas is that honor is not like power, and that power is not always most important. The behavior makes you think: Why would the character act this way? Beers and Probst say when this happens in a novel it is a moment to stop and do a close read. A character can be affected by these signposts and show growth or change. This is when a character in a book acts in a way that is unexpected. Contrast and Contradiction Definition: When the character says or does something thats the opposite what the character has been saying or doing along the story. Billy is known around the city as a tough guy. (It was late May/early June.my favorite time to experiment with something new).The first signpost (I can't say that I really like the word choice, but I can't think of exactly what to call them either!) is contrasts and contradictions. On it is a list of the 25 most commonly taught novels in grades 4-8. I read anything by Kylene Beers, but this is her best book yet! In it she recommends teaching six "signposts" to help aid students in deep reading comprehension.
